JOHN LENNON, OWNED
AND WORN EYEGLASSES
A pair of antique gold-rimmed Windsor-styled eyeglasses that's been personally owned and worn by John Lennon. Lennon had bad eyesight from an early age, but it wasn't until late 1966 that he discovered what later became his most iconic and recognizable trademark – the Windsor glasses. From late 1966 onwards, Lennon wore the Windsor-styled eyeglasses practically every day.
With exceptional provenance, the pair of glasses are housed in a protective case and also a beautiful presentation box with silk inner lining. There are endless photos where Lennon is seen wearing the exact same, or extremely similar, pair of eyeglasses. This is a truly remarkable piece of Beatles memorabilia – and arguably one of the most iconic items in pop culture history.
Condition: Fine vintage condition with signs of use.
Provenance: Gifted by John Lennon to Allan Williams (1930-2016), who was one of the key figures in The Beatles' inner circle and often referred to as the Fifth Beatle. Allan Williams was the original booking agent and the first manager of The Beatles. Williams later gave the sunglasses to his friend Sam Leach (1935-2016), who also worked with The Beatles as the band's promoter in 1961 and 1962. In the accompanying Letter of Provenance from Sam Leach, he writes that the "spectacles" were a former property of John Lennon and that he got the pair from Allan Williams in "1987 or 1988" who had a "collection of Beatles items". Leach ends the letter by writing that "Allan also recalls giving me the spectacles". Also accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from RGU Authenticated. Letter of Authenticity from Alexander Bitar History.
